Operations Manager

The Job

This is a permanent full time position based in Erskine, Scotland working 37 hours per week

Salary: £40-45,000 per annum, dependent upon experience

Purpose & Principle Objectives:

To effectively lead and manage manufacturing operations in Scotland’s Bravest Manufacturing Company (SBMC) Social Enterprise (SE).  This role includes full senior operational management responsibility for all profit & loss, signs, print and mail, signs & specialist engineering cutting production, procurement, stock management, health & safety compliance and quality systems.  A key component of this role is working effectively with SBMC’s Commercial function to help drive growth in sales volume and profitability through the effective control of production cost and commitment to excellent customer service, whilst supporting beneficiaries to achieve SE mission of Improving Lives Every Day.

Your Key Responsibilities:

People & Performance

  • Work directly with functional line management and operational delivery teams to successfully achieve main purpose above
  • Establish, nurture and manage an effective people plan across all activities which meets operational requirements
  • Ensure all staff are trained to deliver at peak performance
  • Deliver social value by providing fulfilling, enriching work experience to beneficiaries
  • Implement modern and effective performance culture across the SE division to meet key performance targets, actively utilising the appraisal process and appropriate performance management tools

Profit

  • Hold full senior management responsibility for profit and loss across SE activities
  • Own the effective operation of fit for purpose procurement procedures across all activities, ensuring RBLI has security of supply for its range of materials and appropriate contingency measures in place
  • Establish and sustain effective stock management processes and controls

Operations & Customer Service

  • To place customers at the heart of every aspect of production planning and delivery
  • Provide input and advice on product specifications and fabrication techniques to facilitate design development
  • Plan and organise production schedules and installation timings to ensure products/projects are delivered in accordance with agreed timescales
  • Oversee and manage production and stringent quality control checks
  • Liaise directly with sales team and general management ensuring client expectations for company products are achieved

Health & Safety

  • Own and implement all aspects of health & safety to the highest standards across the SE function and associated non SE areas, ensuring accident rates and near misses are minimised to the lowest possible outcome
  • To place Health & Safety at the centre of every activity carried out across the SE function and associated non SE areas
  • Ensure appropriate Risk Assessment process, documentation and continual review is embedded as a key SE operating principle
  • Ensure all employees are trained in key health and safety principles and procedures on induction, with appropriate annual refresher updates implemented
  • Represent as key lead, SBMC activities at the Health and Safety Committee meetings and all relevant forums

Communications & Reporting

  • Ensure appropriate, inclusive regular communication across SE is delivered in order to support total employee participation
  • Ensure that relevant, timely and appropriate management information is provided as required

Other Responsibilities

  • Actively support the Director of SBMC in achieving SE performance targets across profit, people and product activity
  • To act as key management coaching support across first line reporting roles within SE manufacturing operations
  • Act as ambassador for SBMC and RBLI both internally and externally


The Requirements

Personal Attributes:

  • Relevant skill, knowledge and experience at senior operations/general management level within a manufacturing production business environment
  • Strong track record of managing successful production operations across a multi-discipline manufacturing environment
  • Strong people leadership skills
  • Strong planning and co-ordination skills
  • Self-starter with high degree of initiative
  • Sound experience of managing effective procurement
  • Sound successful experience of managing effective quality management systems within a production environment
  • Sound experience in managing effective health and safety compliance across a multi-discipline manufacturing environment
  • Strong problem solving approach and ability
  • Sound communication and presentation skills
  • Able to act as strong ambassador for SBMC and wider organisation

Skills & Experience Required:

Essential:

  • At least 3 years proven experience of manufacturing operation leadership at a senior level
  • Proficient in lean production implementation and processes and continuous improvement
  • In depth health and safety knowledge and leadership
  • Full P&L accountability
  • Dynamic leadership
  • Strong teambuilding skills

Desirable:

  • Knowledge, experience and understanding of the charity sector
  • Knowledge and experience of at least one of Signs or Engineering Components, cutting or assembly.
  • Degree or equivalent professional qualification
  • Understanding of client/beneficiary group, how to manage and get the best out of them and improve their lives
  • Training and development skills.
